*Our approach to tracking the bankroll has been agreed to utilize -110 odds for all games to simplify things. The table below reflects that.

Week 1 Bankroll Results.JPG

Despite the 1-3 overall record on our money picks in Week 1, we were still able to come out on top because our Razor Sharp Bet came through (not without some serious drama though!). Thanks to Kyler and Kliff we started off the season up a little more than $300. The Bears D showed up but someone should have told the offense that the season started. Jameis couldn’t get himself out of the way enough to allow Tampa Bay to come home with the victory despite a rough showing from Jimmy G. Finally, the Steelers decided to play dead in New England and make us look rather foolish thinking they could make a game out of it with the Brady-Belichik bunch. Below is a game by game look at all the pick results for the week. Enjoy!

For all games below, the home team is listed second and in CAPS. The lines used are the ones we posted from Sugar House casino on the Wednesday we made our original picks unless we specifically mentioned a line update on the picks page.

Packers vs. BEARS

  • Line: Bears -3.5

  • Pick: Bears

  • Final Score: Packers win 10-3

LoseBadge80.jpg

The first game of the season was a bit of a snooze fest. The Bears defense held up much like we were anticipating. If you had told us the Packers would only score 10 points then we would have already made room in our wallet for our winnings. Sadly, there is still room in our wallet. The Bears offense looked terrible in the passing game and Mitchell Trubisky and company could only muster a measly 3 points. Some of that could be attributed to a supposedly improved Packers defense, but we put most of the blame on the Bears play calling and offensive execution. Tough way for us to start off the season, and we spent plenty of time washing our eyes out that evening to hopefully help forget the sluggish style of football we just witnessed.

Titans vs. BROWNS

  • Line: Browns -5.5

  • Pick: Titans

  • Final Score: Titans win 43-13

WinBadge.jpg

“They were who they thought they were!” Delanie Walker gave a great post game interview and put the Browns back in their place after everyone was pumping them up all offseason. An impressive victory for the Titans for sure and a reminder that Cleveland hasn’t won anything yet. I’m sure some of the offseason acquisitions for the Browns will start to gel but who knows how many weeks that could take.

Ravens vs. DOLPHINS

  • Line: Dolphins +7.0

  • Pick: Dolphins

  • Final Score: Ravens win 59-10

LoseBadge.jpg

Yikes!! I think the Ravens might still be scoring on the Dolphins even as we type this. Lamar Jackson looked great but we are not sure how much we can tell from a Dolphins squad who might be the first team to start immediately tanking in game 1 of the season. Let’s temper our expectations a bit on the Ravens for now and hopefully Miami will find a way to gain some respect back after that shellacking.

Falcons vs. VIKINGS

  • Line: Vikings -3.5

  • Pick: Vikings

  • Final Score: Vikings win 28-12

WinBadge.jpg

This was one of those picks where we really liked the Vikings and were close to being able to pull the trigger on making them a Sharp Bet. We wish we had as the Vikings running game looked absolutely unstoppable. Cousins only had to throw the ball a mere 10 times in a convincing victory over the perplexing Falcons. We said before that the Falcons were trick or treat, and the treat was reserved only for Vikings fans as they got to watch their team stomp the visitors for 4 straight quarters.

Bills vs. JETS

  • Line: Jets -3.0

  • Pick: Jets

  • Final Score: Bills win 17-16

LoseBadge.jpg

It looked for a brief time that the Jets might actually be starting out their season on a positive note. That positivity eroded fast as the Bills came back and stole the game from the home team. The Bills will have a chance next week to make their claim as the best team in NY as they face the Giants in back to back games at Metlife Stadium. Even if the Bills win, being the best team in NY doesn’t look like it’s going to be that great of an accomplishment. The Empire State is looking more like the Empathy State for how we should feel about NY fans having to watch those football teams.

Redskins vs. EAGLES

  • Line: Eagles -9.5

  • Pick: Redskins

  • Final Score: Eagles win 32-27

WinBadge.jpg

After a great start by the Redskins, the Eagles were able to come alive and claim the victory in Week 1. We liked what we saw out of the Skins though and Keenum played a decent game. They were able to cover the spread at least and can use this game as motivation showing that they should be able to hang with anyone.

Rams vs PANTHERS

  • Line: Panthers +3.0

  • Pick: Rams

  • Final Score: Rams win 30-27

PushBadge.jpg

This was a tight game where the line was right on. Cam Newton still struggled throwing the ball downfield but dumping it off to McCaffrey was very successful. It’s hard to blame them for sticking with that. The Rams looked solid and remain in the driver’s seat to cruise to win the NFC West this year.

Chiefs vs. JAGUARS

  • Line: Jaguars +3.5

  • Pick: Jaguars

  • Final Score: Chiefs win 40-26

LoseBadge.jpg

The Jaguars defense was not able to hold up to the strength of the most powerful offense in the league. Add in the fact that Nick Foles barely got a chance to sweat in his new uniform, and it wasn’t a great week for the team from Jacksonville. Their defense should prove to be formidable against other opponents so look for them to be a bit undervalued heading into Week 2. The backup, Gardner Minshew, also looked pretty competent while filling in for Foles. He was never going to be able to keep up with the scoring from Mahomes and company however.

Colts vs. CHARGERS

  • Line: Chargers -6.5

  • Pick: Chargers

  • Final Score: Chargers win 30-24

LoseBadge.jpg

This was one of two overtime games of the week. We are not surprised the Brissett-led Colts were able to stand up against the Chargers in this one. We like what we have seen from him in the past and the Colts still have a solid top to bottom lineup. The Colts came up a little short but showed us they are a team to keep an eye on in the coming weeks.

Bengals vs. SEAHAWKS

  • Line: Seahawks -9.0

  • Pick: Seahawks

  • Final Score: Seahawks win 21-20

LoseBadge.jpg

This game was way closer than we would have expected. The Seahawks at home are usually a dominant force but on this day they had trouble with the supposed to be measly Bengals squad. This might be a theme for the Bengals this year as we see them play other teams tough but don’t end up walking away with too many victories.

NoBet.jpg

Giants vs. COWBOYS

  • Line: Cowboys -7.0

  • Pick: Cowboys

  • Final Score: Cowboys win 35-17

WinBadge.jpg

The Cowboys got off to a solid start to their season with a little help from the scheduling fairies. Opening up against a discombobulated Giants squad is a nice way to start the season. Eli still looks washed up as expected, and it will be interesting to see how many weeks he lasts before we get to see what Daniel Jones can bring to the table. The Cowboys should be a solid team this year, but we won’t be able to see how solid until they plays some better competition in the weeks to come.

Lions vs. CARDINALS

  • Line: Cardinals +2.5

  • Pick: Cardinals

  • Final Score: Cardinals tie 27-27

WinBadge545.jpg

This game! Phew! This is the one that really saved us in Week 1 and allowed us to have a winning week despite going 1-3 with all of our money picks. We really liked the Cardinals at home going against what should be a less than mediocre Lions squad. Things were not looking good for us through 3 quarters as the Lions had amassed a 24-6 lead heading into the 4th quarter. Kyler Murray was off to a slow start, and we were beginning to wonder if the offensive expectations were ever going to come to fruition. It finally did in a big way as Larry Fitzgerald showed reanimated himself from 10 years ago and was catching passes all over the place. It must feel nice for him to finally have someone throwing a decent ball his way again. This game couldn’t have been any more exciting for us as the OT thriller with a 2.5 point spread kept us on the edge of our seat until the last whistle. When the Cards scored that final touchdown to make it 24-22, they could have helped us breathe easier by just missing the 2 point conversion. Not so - they converted and made us sweat it out for another 10 minutes of football. In the end it was a great win for us, and a fun game to watch (from the 4th quarter on - we were pretty miserable before that haha).

49ers vs. BUCCANEERS

  • Line: Buccaneers (Pick)

  • Pick: Buccaneers

  • Final Score: 49ers win 31-17

LoseBadge80.jpg

Jameis Jameis Jameis. What kind of decision making was that on Sunday? Jimmy G gifted the Buccs with an early pick 6 and Jameis had to go and try to outdo him. Double pick 6’s sunk Tampa Bay’s hopes of ever coming away with a victory in this one. We will most likely still like the Buccs in some of the coming weeks’ games, but Winston has got to step up and at least play like an average quarterback. Bruce Arians should be able to turn this around when his quarterback doesn’t throw as many TD passes to the other team. We are still not impressed with the 49ers squad even though they came away with the victory here. This game was tight into the 4th quarter and could have gone either way. The Niners were able to take advantage of mistakes and get their season off to a 1-0 start.

SharpBet Square.jpg

Steelers vs. PATRIOTS

  • Line: Patriots -5.5

  • Pick: Steelers

  • Final Score: Patriots win 33-3

LoseBadge80.jpg

For as much fun as that Cardinals game was to watch, this one was kinda the opposite. The Patriots dominated from the opening whistle and didn’t really let us have much to cheer for throughout the entire matchup. Brady and Belichik looked in playoff form already and the Steelers were just looking to get out of there. We think the Steelers should bounce back in the coming weeks and still be a solid playoff contender, but for this week the Patriots continued their dominance over Pittsburgh. We should have went with history here and taken the Pats to easily handle the Steelers at home. Now with the addition of AB, the Patriots offense will become even more intriguing. Their cupcake schedule will produce some interestingly high lines so we’ll see if we can get one back against them in the near future.

Texans vs. SAINTS

  • Line: Saints -7.0

  • Pick: Texans

  • Final Score: Saints win 30-28

WinBadge.jpg

Wow another late game loss for the Texans after a heroic effort from Deshaun Watson. This is starting to be a theme for Watson’s career so far. He makes outstanding plays to bring the Texans back into the game only to be thwarted by the soft and supple prevent defense the Texans love to play in the closing minutes of games. It was a clutch kick by Lutz and an exciting finish but not the one that Houston grown Sharp & Square would prefer. At least the Texans covered I guess.

NoBet Square.jpg

Broncos vs. RAIDERS

  • Line: Raiders (Pick)

  • Pick: Broncos

  • Final Score: Raiders win 24-16

LoseBadge.jpg

The Raiders were actually fairly impressive in this game after the shit show of an offseason they just went through. Carr looked serviceable, and he had a nice connection with wideout Tyrell Williams. We expected the Broncos defense to eat up the Raiders and spit them out but Oakland had other plans. They looked like a frisky team who is going to battle it out this year - perhaps galvanized by being freed from the AB circus. We will give the Broncos a pass on this one in Vic Fangio’s first start as head coach. Their defense should still be able to keep it close with future opponents. We are most worried about how flaccid the offense looked with Flacco. We will see if they can do enough to scratch out a few victories this year.
